Our Global Mission

Our Global Mission

Habitat for Humanity Sarasota builds safe, decent and affordable houses in our local community, and we contribute to decent shelter around the world. As a part of guatemalaHabitat for Humanity International's greater efforts to create strength, stability, self-reliance and shelter everywhere, each Habitat affiliate is asked to tithe to Habitat International. Habitat Sarasota empowers families around the world to live a better life.

Families around the world partner with Habitat for Humanity to build safe and secure homes since 1976. Habitat is active in nearly 70 countries and has helped more than 6.8 million people to improve their living conditions. Back in 1979, at a home dedication in Zaire, Habitat for Humanity founder, Millard Fuller, received a tithe donation of $200. That gift launched a new affiliate in Guatemala. From that one gift, the entire Habitat tithe program began.

A tithe means "a tenth" and is a gift that is given to support a broader mission. Traditionally, a tithe is known as a gift given to a church, but Habitat adopted the concept to help support Habitat’s global mission to build a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Today the program is called the Global Impact Fund.

Habitat for Humanity International recently recognized us for helping nearly 400 families in 10 countries. A $3,000 gift directed to Guatemala from the Gomez-Palacio family boosted Habitat Sarasota's lifetime tithe to more than $1 million! We are dedicated to the global mission to build a world where everyone deserves a decent place to live. At the request of Enrique and his family, this tithe will be going back to where the tithe program began, Guatemala.
