April 2, 2015 – Sarasota, FL – There are several things one can do in 30 days – go on a trip… gain weight… lose weight… build a house. Build a house?

It sounds ambitious because it is ambitious but that is just what is on the agenda beginning Monday, April 6, 2015 when local luxury home builder Voigt Brothers Construction combine forces to build a house in 30 days. This special project, part of Habitat Sarasota’s 30th anniversary celebration, will test the limits of an expanded volunteer force with the final result being a new home for a local working family.

“Our company, Voigt Brothers, is very excited about this project that will complete a home in weeks, not months,” said Mike Voigt, who with his brother, Steve, owns the firm. “Though Voigt Brothers specializes in custom homes in Manatee and Sarasota counties we know how important the need for affordable housing is in this community and the quicker we can build, the sooner a family can have a home.”

Work really began several months ago when Habitat Sarasota staff approached local construction groups about a possible collaboration. Habitat wanted to build a house in 30 days in honor of its three decade anniversary. Once word spread, several contractors signed on to the make the build project a reality.

Habitat volunteers have laid the foundation for the house, located at 1988 24th Street in Sarasota. Beginning the morning of April 6, Voigt and his team of volunteers will be present to frame and then raise the walls of the house and the house’s exterior is expected to be complete that first week. Finishing work, including painting, tiling, siding and landscaping will be completed in the coming weeks with a goal of the house finished on May 6, 2015.

“Habitat Sarasota is very excited about the 30 day Blitz Build,” said Renee Snyder, Habitat Executive Director. “We are very grateful that so many construction industry partners have committed to help us build quickly and efficiently. We are proud of Habitat’s 30 years of providing affordable housing to Sarasota and what better way to celebrate than devoting 30 days to such a worthwhile project?”

The Blitz Build house is located on a parcel of land that will eventually be home to six Habitat homes. This mini neighborhood will transform the block of 24th Street and Washington Court from overgrown vacant lots to a site of safe and decent housing. Completion date for the entire program is Spring 2016.

“Many might not realize that our agency started its work in Newtown 30 years ago, and the transformation of 24th Street and Washington Court brings our work in this community almost full circle. In fact, the project’s site is just steps away from the first Habitat homes built in our area. With work on the project beginning as we celebrate Habitat Sarasota’s 30th year of operation, it’s almost like this project is our anniversary gift to the community,” said Snyder

Groups or individuals interested in working on the Blitz Build can contact Vicki Copeland, Habitat for Humanity Sarasota volunteer coordinator at 941-487-5529.
