Habitat Sarasota asked. The community responded. Now it’s time to break ground!
We are pleased to let you know that Habitat Sarasota broke ground on our first VETERAN BUILD on Saturday, November 9, 2013! Almost two years ago, Habitat Sarasota established a goal to build homes for deserving military veterans – those individuals who have given so much to our country.
At the ground breaking visitors had the opportunity to see the house plans and meet our soon to be homeowner, Ms. McCants, a former U.S. Army Sergeant. While serving, Ms. McCants was assigned to the Army’s language school where she became fluent in Farsi and later served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Her service was cut short after 4 ½ years when she was injured in an IED blast.
Ms. McCants is a graduate of the University of South Florida with a degree in social work and joined the Army in 2008 and is the mother of a teen daughter who is looking forward to having her own bedroom and a stable place to call home. Ms. McCants is now working in Sarasota, which is a two-hour roundtrip commute each day due to housing rental rates at an all-time high in Sarasota.
Ms. McCants began her volunteer sweat equity requirement several weeks ago and is well on her way to becoming a proud and deserving homeowner. Ms. McCants says “I am humbled by the overwhelming support and generosity of the Habitat program.”
We are grateful for the community’s support of Habitat for Humanity Sarasota’s VETERAN BUILD Program.
