The lack of affordable housing in close proximity to our workforce is a growing problem in Sarasota, an issue that Turquoise knows firsthand. Turquoise works for the School Board of Sarasota County, and her income does not support the high cost of rent or payments for a traditional mortgage.

Turquoise and her two boys have been living in Manatee County and she struggles with the daily commute to the boys’ schools and then to her work. Her move will have a big impact on her transportation expenses and give her more time to spend with her boys. But most importantly, she is looking forward to her boys being able to live within their school district so they can be involved in after school activities and spend time with friends after school.

Our home in Hammock Place will provide a permanent, affordable place for me to raise my boys. We plan to create many beautiful memories together in our new home.

The construction of this home was sponsored by Stock Signature Homes with volunteer support from Lake Club residents.

Jewelle applied to Habitat Sarasota because she was unable to afford the cost of living in Sarasota. Jewelle has worked for the same company for more than 20 years, however, like a growing number of service industry workers, she was unable to afford the high cost of rent. In fact, 4 out of 10 families in Sarasota can’t afford the cost of home expenses in our community. To get by, Jewelle and her daughter, 13, moved in with family. They have shared a single bedroom for over a year. While this has provided them a temporary living situation, it has come at a cost.

Jewelle says she is looking forward to her daughter being able to invite friends over to her home, especially for sleepovers. Something every child should be able to look forward to.

I hope being in our own home will change our social lives. Due to our living situation, we tend to keep to ourselves. In our forever home, I hope we can build friendships.
