Help Bridge the Gap in Affordability

Help Bridge the Gap in Affordability

Renee Snyder

A lot has changed since Habitat for Humanity Sarasota was founded in 1985. A time before cell phones, personal computers, and the internet. A time when University Parkway was called County Line Road. Back then, Habitat Sarasota could build a home for $35,000.

Today, costs to build an affordable home have risen by more than 400%. We conform to the same standards as any builder and pay  permit and impact fees required of any homebuilder. In fact, last year, we paid $189,000 toward impact and permit fees to deliver affordable homes.

The financial stability for our families is at the forefront of construction design. History shows that income levels of our families have not kept up with inflation and rising energy costs. That is why we believe it is important to provide Energy Star appliances, impact windows and doors, and cutting-edge construction materials such as insulated concrete form walls to reduce utility costs.

Habitat Sarasota is unstoppable despite today’s challenges. We are relentless because our vision is a world where everyone deserves a decent place to live.

Resilience of our organization

We continue to adapt to the ever changing regulatory requirements to deliver our mission. Our toolbox overflows with community support. Every resource is essential for us to quickly respond to homeowners’ needs and maintain a financially strong organization.

We end most days reflecting on the joy expressed by so many families. Hearing the relief in their voice as they thank Habitat and share the difference their home has made on their family during this crisis.

Since March, eight families have the security of a new Habitat home and two families were assisted through our Critical Home Repair program with a new air conditioner and a roof replacement.

What is missing is the interaction and camaraderie that our volunteers, donors, homeowner applicants and partners bring to our build sites. We miss celebrating with our families at their home dedication.

Until we can safely gather together in person, we hold steady and focused on the magnified need. The need to build more Habitat homes for our community.

Finding balance while leading change

Over the past several months, I found comfort reflecting on families that have a good home because of Habitat Sarasota. I picture 350 families with adequate space, a quality kitchen, and outdoor areas to enjoy. I see children with their own room and a quiet place to study, especially now with many enrolled in e-learning. I see self-
reliant families that know their mortgage payments are affordable.

I was recently asked, “Is there someone you lean on for inspiration?” Without hesitation, I responded “I lean on the Lord, I walk with him every single day.” With faith and love for our neighbor we will endure.

May the blessings of your generosity and support of our mission bring you much happiness. I wish you peace, love, happiness and good health. Together, we build.
