$500,000 Awarded through the City of Sarasota Office of Housing and Community Development
Habitat Sarasota and the City of Sarasota Office of Housing and Community Development (OHCD) partnered to build three homes through the SHIP Program.
Habitat Sarasota received $500,000 in funds from the State Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) program to build three affordable single-family homes in Sarasota. The homes are sold at no-profit, financed with a 0% interest mortgage, to income-qualified families that earn up to 80% of area median income. Habitat Sarasota aims to serve families with an affordable mortgage not exceeding 30% of their gross monthly income. The objective is to remove people from housing situations that are unhealthy, substandard, overcrowded and not affordable.
SHIP funds allow us to serve almost 30% more income-qualified families this year with permanent, affordable housing. Sarasota has an obligation to provide housing solutions within financial reach of our workforce and Habitat Sarasota is leading the efforts to address these needs in our community.

“It is important that Florida lawmakers support a proposal to allocate the William E. Sadowski Affordable Housing Trust Fund strictly to affordable housing,” says Barbara Beck, president, Habitat for Humanity of Florida. “The ongoing loss of SHIP funds for Habitat affiliates throughout the state directly effects our ability to serve more families. SHIP funds can be used to build homes, purchase building materials, all things related to home construction and to provide down payment assistance. Reduction in SHIP funding negatively effects our economy.”
