Ms. Ibarra’s motto is “You should never lose hope,” but with a roof leak and the fear of being fropped by her homeowner’s insurance carries, she began to lose hope. Ms. Ibarra stated, “I was in fear. The leak was getting worse, and I didn’t know what to do.” Finally, after many calls to local agencies, she learned about our Critical Repair Program. She was overjoyed because she finally found “someone who cares that I stay in my home.”

Originally from Spain, Ms. Ibarra came to the United States at 20 years old with a diplomatic family from England to be an au pair for their children. She quickly realized the opportunities offered in America. Uneducated and sending money home to her family, she was determined to better her life. Upon putting the children down to sleep at night, she attended a home school program and received her GED. Afterward, she attended college, attained both her master’s and doctorate degrees, and become a clinical psychologist. “I always want to help people,” said Ms. Ibarra. When other doctors would not take patients that did not have the means to pay or were on Medicaid, she was committed to help them. Sadly, her career was short-lived.

Ms. Ibarra became immune-compromised and became disabled. Not only did she give up her beloved clients, but she gave up her livelihood. Her home, a controlled environment that is chemical-free, became not only her shelter but her safe haven. So when the roof started leaking, she knew she needed help because moving to assisted living was not an option.
